Using OpenAI GPT to Access External APIs

Using OpenAI GPT to Access External APIs

So Finally, I’ve Started This Series

This is tutorial one, and I always wanted to start these AI series to ensure that everyone is learning. It’s a very easy series, even if you don’t have a background in AI. That’s totally fine because today, you’re going to learn from scratch how to use the ChatGPT API. So let’s get started.

First, you need to set up your API key. I have stored my API key in a separate file because I don’t want to show it. You can create your own secret key on the OpenAI website. Save it in a text file or use it inside your code, but it’s always recommended to store sensitive information separately.

Next, you need to install the OpenAI library. If it’s already installed, you can skip this step.

Now, let’s learn how to create a conversation with ChatGPT using the API. You can start a conversation by sending a series of messages. Each message has a role (system, user, or assistant) and content. For example, you can ask a question as a user, and the assistant will respond accordingly.

To make the conversation more interactive, you can append additional messages to continue the conversation. For example, you can ask the assistant to tell you a joke, and it will respond with a joke.

But what if you want to access external APIs? OpenAI allows you to integrate external APIs into ChatGPT. For example, you can use the OpenWeatherMap API to get weather information. You just need to create a custom function that makes a request to the API and returns the desired information.

In this tutorial, I have provided an example of a custom function called ‘get_weather’. It takes a location as a parameter and returns the temperature and condition. You can call this function within the conversation to get weather forecasts for different locations.

OpenAI provides a cookbook with various tutorials on how to call functions, handle rate limits, and perform tasks like question answering and multi-classification. You can refer to the cookbook for more information.

It’s important to note that OpenAI offers different models, such as GPT-3.5 Turbo and GPT-4. The choice of model depends on your requirements and budget.

In conclusion, using OpenAI GPT to access external APIs opens up a world of possibilities. You can create interactive conversations and integrate various functionalities into your applications. Make sure to explore the tutorials and experiment with different functions to enhance your AI projects.
