Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, chances are you have heard of ChatGPT. If you are like me, you have probably tried to use it for everything, even if it doesn’t make sense. This gave me the idea to see if I could use it to help with TFT. It started with simple questions like how to stop people from contesting me, and surprisingly, it gave some great advice. I also asked why my rank was not as high as I wanted, and it gave me some cold hard truths. This led me to see if ChatGPT could give Champion suggestions while I’m playing a game.
The only problem was that ChatGPT has no knowledge of the world past 2021. So how could I get it to give me suggestions for the current year, let alone a game of TFT? It turns out that ChatGPT has an advanced data analysis function that allows you to upload files for review and analysis. I decided to pull all of the TFT units into a spreadsheet along with their Origins, classes, trait break points, and top four percentages. I uploaded that to ChatGPT along with a prompt of what I wanted to get from it. After many attempts and constant refining, I finally got it to reliably spit out suggestions.
In this article, I will show you highlights of using ChatGPT for Champion suggestions in TFT gameplay. Starting with the first PVP round, ChatGPT correctly recognizes the active Origins and classes from the units, as well as the next break point in each. As I level up, the suggestions start to include higher-cost units. At level four, it suggests three-cost units, and at level six, it suggests four-cost units. Once I hit level seven, it suggests five-cost units.
However, I found that the effort to set this up far outweighed the value it provided. It is much better to do your own research and develop strategies based on your current board state. While AI may make its way into strategy games in the future, it will be difficult for developers to prevent people from abusing it for advantages.
