Hi everyone, I’m Kent Louie, a science teacher and education expert from Vancouver, Canada. In this episode, I want to share my experience using ChatGPT to create lesson plans and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach.
When I first tried ChatGPT to write a lesson plan, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the output. It exceeded my expectations. If you haven’t tried ChatGPT yet or are considering using it, I highly recommend it.
To use ChatGPT, you need to sign up for an account on openai.com and choose ChatGPT as the app. When writing your question, provide as much detail as possible. For example, I asked ChatGPT to create a detailed lesson plan on the three states of matter using the 5E instructional model.
The lesson plan generated by ChatGPT was impressive. It included a grade level, time commitment, and materials, which were not even mentioned in my original request. The plan followed the 5E instructional model, with sections for engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate. Each section had detailed notes, stories, activities, and discussion questions for students.
One advantage of using ChatGPT for lesson plans is that it is quick and provides specific details and activities that you can try with your class. As a seasoned teacher, I enjoy seeing what other teachers do to teach a concept, and ChatGPT can be a valuable resource for ideas.
However, there are also disadvantages to using ChatGPT for lesson plans. One major disadvantage is that the generated plan does not include modifications for students with learning disabilities or behavioral issues. This is something that I need to address separately for my classroom. Additionally, while the generated plan is detailed, it still requires modification to fit the specific needs of my students.
In conclusion, ChatGPT can be a helpful tool for generating lesson plan ideas, but it should not replace the expertise and customization that a teacher provides. Teaching is about reaching learners and knowing how to best meet their needs. ChatGPT can assist with suggestions, but ultimately, it is the teacher’s responsibility to adapt and modify the lessons to fit their students.
