If you are one of those students who are very passionate about finding the right study techniques to boost your productivity and save time while also achieving good results, then you must be familiar with these three evidence-based study techniques. Today, I’m going to show you how to take these already effective methods to a whole new level using the power of ChatGPT.
Hi everyone, my name is Khan. I’m an MBA student and I graduated with a major in Biochemistry and a minor in Computer Science three months ago. During my last semester in college, I discovered ChatGPT. It was quite controversial at the time, and even now, some people believe that college students using ChatGPT are making themselves lazier and less intelligent. However, I believe that these tools are not evil in themselves; they only become evil when they are misused. In this article, I am going to show you how to use ChatGPT the right way to boost your study performance.
The concept of the famous study technique is to pick a topic that you want to memorize and then explain it or pretend to teach it to someone who has no prior knowledge of that topic. The simpler and more comprehensible you can make your explanation, the deeper your understanding of that topic will become. However, it is not always convenient to have a real person to practice with, especially when everyone is so busy in college. This is where ChatGPT can come in as the middle ground. You can prompt ChatGPT to become your study buddy, ask it to practice the famous technique with you, and give you follow-up questions when your explanation is not making sense. Now you have a study buddy who will always be there for you, 24/7, with no complaints or judgments.
The only downside is that you have to actually type the answers instead of just saying them out loud. However, I see this as a plus because the process of typing it in gives you a little bit more time to think about your explanation, which helps with the memorizing process in general.
Active recall is an important aspect of studying, as emphasized by many study tips experts. You don’t want the first time your brain is tested on a topic to be on the actual exam. You have to train your brain and make it work hard to retrieve the information. Simply reading the textbook and highlighting your lecture notes does not help. With the help of ChatGPT, this process can be sped up by around 65%. You can feed ChatGPT with all your class materials and ask it to generate practice exams for you. If you have a previous test in the same class, you can feed it to ChatGPT to create something similar in format. ChatGPT will provide you with answers, explanations, and feedback, saving you so much time.
As a virtual learner, it is beneficial to see how the new concepts you are being taught connect to each other and how they are visualized and put into the big picture. However, making mind maps or flowcharts for every single topic in every single class takes too much time. This is where I use ChatGPT to help. I enable plugins like Whimsical Diagram or Diagram Show Me in ChatGPT to generate diagrams or mind maps for me. While they may not be the most detailed or gorgeous mind maps, they set the basics and save me time and effort.
I am such a big fan of Ali Abdul and have watched so many of his study tips videos. He always emphasizes the importance of putting in the effort, work, and time to retrieve your knowledge. ChatGPT does not replace this, but it does make the process easier so that you can focus more on actually learning and understanding the information.
We are the first generation to be born in the bloom of technology, social media, and AI. We have to embrace this and jump on the shoulders of these technological giants. AI cannot replace you, but a person who knows how to effectively work with AI can achieve great success.
