Using Artificial Intelligence to Create a Healthy Meal Plan

Using Artificial Intelligence to Create a Healthy Meal Plan

Foreign about it artificial intelligence doing all kinds of crazy new things everyone’s talking about chatGPT all of those sort of Technologies. So, I wanted to test it out and do a little bit of an experiment and ask chatGPT to make me a healthy meal plan. In today’s video, I’m going to be putting artificial intelligence to the test and asking it to create a healthy day of eating for me. As a dietitian, I am then gonna go over what my thoughts were about the meal plan as well as did I think it was healthy, did I think it was a balanced and some of the pros and cons of this meal plan.

I wanted to test out what sort of things chatGPT would give me if I asked it for a healthy meal plan. Would it be healthy, would it be practical and accessible to make, would it taste good, would it be nutritionally balanced, all of those sort of things. So in this video or experiment, if you want to call it that, you will see myself, a registered dietitian, make and try all of these meals that are suggested by chatGPT. And then I’m going to give you my perspective on the whole thing and what I thought.

Alright, now I’m going to show you on my screen what I entered in as a prompt in chatGPT to get my recipes for today. The prompt that I entered into the system was, ‘Please provide a one-day healthy meal plan including meals and snacks.’ Now, I want to say here, I know this is a very general non-specific prompt, and I did do that on purpose. I also want to say that a healthy diet or healthy meal plan is very subjective. I realize that everyone is a little bit different, some people have very specific dietary needs or preferences, things that are quote unquote healthy for one person may not be healthy for another. Also, I want to mention that in general, I don’t believe in the idea of ‘Good Foods’ or ‘Bad Foods’ or inherently healthy or unhealthy foods. For the most part, I think that all foods can fit into a healthy diet in moderation. For the purposes of this experiment, I purposely made my prompt for chatGPT very general and simple because I wanted to see how the artificial intelligence would interpret this whole thing of a healthy meal plan and just kind of see what it would give me.

As you can see on the screen, it gave me three meals plus some snacks throughout the day. I will break those down more as we go.

Okay, this is everything that I purchased today for this day of eating. I do have some of the ingredients already, so I do have some frozen salmon fillets, which just saved me a lot of money, although they don’t taste as good as fresh salmon in my opinion. I also have some hummus, some whole grain bread, eggs already, and a few other things. Okay, so this is what I did purchase today: produce, so got some asparagus, apples, bananas, some sort of sweet lettuce mix that I haven’t tried yet, the large thing of strawberries, which were on sale by far the cheapest of all the berry options, a sweet potato, a lemon, and a bell pepper. Then a few other things, oh, I’ve also got some baby carrots and some cherry tomatoes. I also got a quick quinoa and brown rice since it’s so much quicker than making it by boiling it on the stove. I’m gonna try this Oikos triple zero yogurt, vanilla flavor. I got some tea, I’m not usually a big tea drinker, but this one sounded good, so we’ll see how it goes. Got some mixed nuts, they are salted, so you know, maybe not what chatGPT would consider healthy, but there you go. Everything bagel seasoning for some avocado toast. Here’s some chicken breasts tenderloins that I purchased. And then decided to try this sparkling water, I’ve tried one other flavor, I thought it was pretty good, and this one sounded interesting as well. So that’s everything.

So let’s jump into the first meal, which was breakfast. So for breakfast, the AI had me making a vegetable omelette with two eggs, spinach, bell peppers, and onions, whole grain toast with avocado spread, a side of mixed berries, and green tea or black tea unsweetened. I actually made an egg scramble instead of an omelette, but used all the same ingredients. My thoughts after eating this meal were that I thought it was pretty good, it was filling. The avocado toast was okay, I just used packaged avocado because that’s what I had. The egg scramble I thought was really good and filling. The tea was fine, it kind of tasted like nothing to me. For the mid-morning snack, I had Greek yogurt with sliced almonds and a drizzle of honey, and added some frozen peaches as well. For lunch, I had grilled chicken breasts with steamed broccoli and quinoa, a mixed green salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and French dressing. For the afternoon snack, I had baby carrots and some everything but the bagel flavored hummus. For dinner, I had baked salmon fillet with lemon and dill, roasted sweet potatoes and asparagus, quinoa or brown rice, a side salad, and sparkling water with a squeeze of lime or lemon. For the evening snack, I had a handful of nuts and herbal tea.

As a dietitian, I felt that this meal plan incorporated a lot of different food groups and had a good mix of proteins, fruits, vegetables, grains, and fats. It used mostly whole foods and had accessible, common ingredients. However, it did take a decent amount of time to prepare the meals, and there was limited variety in the ingredients used. Additionally, there was no room for desserts or sweets in the meal plan. Overall, while this AI-generated meal plan can provide ideas, it should not replace personalized recommendations from healthcare professionals.

Would you use this for meal plan ideas? Let me know your thoughts!
