Hello students, this video will give you a brief introduction into the way that AI will be used in our course and what you can expect throughout this semester.
It is important that you take a moment to read carefully through these policies so that you have a clear sense of how we will be using AI this semester and how to ensure that you are taking good notes and keeping the necessary transcription files to receive credit for your assignments.
The first thing to note is that there is a department-wide AI policy that you should pay attention to. If you are unsure about how generative AI tools might be used in your courses, be sure to check with your professor directly. This policy is an important starting point for our conversations about academic integrity and honesty.
Writing itself is changing rapidly, so it is essential to understand what AI tools can do and to use them carefully and with integrity. There are policies regarding credited and uncredited work that you should be aware of. In this video, we will focus specifically on credited work, as academic honesty is the foundation of our course.
There are potential challenges when using AI-generated text, images, or other pieces in assignments. If a document is fully AI-generated and uncredited, there is information about how students can receive a new deadline to turn in a fresh paper. However, our focus today is on the requirements for using AI-generated content in assignments.
Students may only receive full credit on assignments requiring AI tools if they provide all the required documentation and correctly label it. This will be included as part of the template for our papers, and it is important to take careful notes and document as you go. Crediting sources of information is not only a matter of integrity but also a way of understanding and framing the information you have received.
Each assignment that asks you to use AI will have a specific role and method for using AI. It is crucial to be clear about how you are using AI so that readers understand where your information, ideas, and words are coming from within your paper. If you prefer, you have the option to consult with another person instead of using AI tools.
You will receive instructions about the types of AI tools in class demonstrations, and you should state clearly how you are using them in one or two sentences. Depending on the instructor, you may be asked to cite the AI tools in-text. Remember to make a clear distinction between your own writing and that of the AI generating tool.
The second part of this video focuses on using ChatGPT. You can create an account at the start of the semester to save your conversations. After your work cited page, you will be required to share the links to the complete set of AI prompts and responses in your final draft. Even if you don’t use all of them, you can include a list of the links for further review.
To save transcripts from ChatGPT, you can use the share chat option at the end of the conversation in the desktop version. If you are using the web or app version, the process may be slightly different. The demonstrations in this video will be based on the web version.
In your MLA template, make sure to include the declaration of AI role and method, followed by the work cited section and the full transcript. Clear documentation is important for learning to use these tools effectively and for future workplace skills.
Thank you for watching this video and I look forward to working with you this semester. There will be a brief quiz to test your understanding of these policies. If you have any questions, feel free to email me or ask during office hours.
