Understanding Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT

Welcome back to College Conversations. I’m Dr. Fedor, and I’m here to help you navigate college. Please remember to hit like, subscribe, and share this video with other students who may also want to learn about artificial intelligence.

Many students have emailed me asking what AI is and what ChatGPT is. Today, I have with me Maxine Gerard, an information literacy librarian at American International College, to help us understand these concepts.

AI, or artificial intelligence, is a computer system designed to mimic how humans interact and present information. ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is an AI program that generates responses based on user prompts. It creates new content instead of providing a list of websites like a Google search.

College students can utilize ChatGPT in the brainstorming stage of a research paper. It can provide examples of prompts or related topics to help students get started. It acts as a partner in brainstorming and helps students generate ideas and outlines.

However, it’s important to use ChatGPT with caution. Always check with your professor before using it, as some professors may not allow its use. ChatGPT should not be used to write an entire paper. The information it provides may not be accurate or up to date. It’s essential to verify the information and use ChatGPT as a tool to assist in the writing process, not as a substitute for your own work.

In conclusion, AI and ChatGPT are valuable tools when used appropriately. They can enhance the research and brainstorming process for college students. However, it’s crucial to remember that they are not a replacement for critical thinking and writing skills. Always consult with your professors and use these tools responsibly.

Thank you, Maxine, for joining us today. Remember to hit subscribe, like, and keep learning!
