The Use of ChatGPT in Nursing and Health Science Education

Thank you, Tini, for the introduction. I am happy to see so many people interested in this topic, and I’m happy to follow up on the presentation that Rich just gave. In this article, I will address how nurses can use ChatGPT and how it can be used in Health Science Education.

First, let me briefly explain what ChatGPT is. ChatGPT refers to Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It is an artificial intelligence language model developed by OpenAI. It was trained with a massive set of written texts up to September 2021, encompassing the entire internet. However, it is important to note that ChatGPT does not have knowledge in itself and may have biases from the internet.

There are other similar systems available, such as Google BERT, Eliza, Mitalama, Baidu Ernie, and many more. These chatbots are designed for conversations and can be used for various purposes.

In the context of nursing and health science education, ChatGPT can be utilized in several ways. It can be used to generate patient education materials, automate charting and documentation, generate medication lists and instructions, summarize research articles, and translate languages to communicate with patients who speak different languages.

However, it is important to note that ChatGPT does not have the latest information and should not be solely relied upon for critical decisions. To address this limitation, a physician has developed Bright Spark, a system trained specifically on cardiology guidelines, providing trustworthy information for medical consultation.

In a proof of concept study, we used ChatGPT and Google BART to improve the readability of written patient information materials. The original materials were too complex, and we aimed to simplify them to a sixth-grade reading level. While ChatGPT and Google BART were able to decrease the complexity, Google BART sometimes oversimplified the text by omitting important information.

Despite these limitations, ChatGPT can still be a valuable tool for nurses and health professionals. It can summarize large amounts of text, answer specific questions about best practices and guidelines, generate structured data from unstructured text, assist in language translation, and help in writing coherent and grammatically correct texts.

In education, ChatGPT can be used to train communication skills, provide inspiration for writing, and optimize educational materials. It can also be used as an educational chatbot to assist students in finding information and streamlining their thinking process. Additionally, it can be used to train other skills in a safe environment.

In conclusion, ChatGPT and related technologies have the potential to greatly benefit nursing and health science education. They can assist in various tasks, improve communication, and enhance the learning experience. However, it is important to use them as tools and not rely solely on them for critical decisions. The future of education is evolving, and we are privileged witnesses to these advancements.

Thank you so much!
