The Role of ChatGPT in Patient Education

Hello and welcome back to our YouTube channel, Learner AI ChatGPT for beginners. If this is your first time joining us, please like, share, and subscribe to our channel for various educational topics.

ChatGPT can be extremely helpful in the education sector. Teachers, professors, students, and administrators can use it to their benefit. Outside of the classroom, there are other areas in which we can educate ourselves. One area in specific is patient education.

Healthcare can be complicated for practitioners, so just imagine being a patient. The doctor, nurse, or medical professional may use terms about illnesses or treatment plans that we cannot comprehend. As a patient, being able to use ChatGPT, we can utilize it to learn more about treatment plans, disorders, or illnesses.

There was a study completed by the Massachusetts General Hospital. In the study, they wanted to see how ChatGPT would respond to patients when they ask about a colonoscopy. The team pulled eight common questions from the frequently asked questions section of three randomly selected hospitals from the U.S. News and World Reports list of the top 20 gastroenterology surgery hospitals. They then entered those questions into ChatGPT twice using unique chat sessions. Then the team tapped a group of four gastroenterologists to review both the ChatGPT and the website answers for ease of understanding, scientific adequacy, and satisfaction with the answer. On the whole, physician reviewers found that ChatGPT answers entirely adequately.

So, of course, in medicine, this can be a great way that students or patients can learn more about a certain area. But, of course, we should always use ChatGPT as a tool and not let it be the only thing that we reference. We should use this information in conjunction with the information that we’re getting from medical professionals.

Let’s go to ChatGPT for an example. Let’s ask ChatGPT about a certain illness or sickness to see what happens. I actually missed the spelling of sinusitis or sinus infection, and I asked what ChatGPT came back with. Sinusitis can be classified into several types based upon the duration and scope of inflammation. You have acute sinusitis, subacute sinusitis, chronic sinusitis, or recurrent sinusitis. So, what we can do from that perspective is if the doctor may have said we have acute sinusitis, we can ask what are the treatments for that.

Now, as ChatGPT is generating the responses, do not replace this for the use of a medical professional. This is to be used in addition to it. It’s essential to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and personalized treatment plan.

So, if we were to go up and let’s look at some of the treatments for it. Symptomatic relief, over-the-counter pain relievers, nasal decongestant, saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation. So, it definitely provides that information. So, if you go into the office and you’re diagnosed with something, you want to learn more, ChatGPT could definitely be a great source for patient education.

But that is all for today’s video. Thank you so much for joining us. We hope to have you back. Have a good one!
