Since its release in November last year, chatGPT has proven to be an impressive tool for various purposes. The chatbot’s capabilities have surpassed our expectations, as Google discovered that it could hire chatGPT as an entry-level coder if it were to interview at the company. However, chatGPT is not without flaws. Some users have reported that the bot sometimes produces misinformation, gives incorrect answers to coding problems, and makes mistakes in basic math. But despite its flaws, the rise of chatGPT has sparked debates over whether it will replace jobs.
One of the biggest limitations of chatGPT is its inability to retain instructions across sessions. You take the time to instruct the chatbot on your preferences, it understands and sticks to it, and on your next chat session, it forgets any instructions. It’s an annoying limitation to put up with. Now, chatGPT is leveling up with a game-changing new feature called custom instructions.
The custom instructions feature is a cross-session memory that allows chatGPT to retain key instructions across chat sessions. It provides chatGPT users with the means to give standing instructions that the AI chatbot will recall and apply in later chats, preventing the need for repetitive back-and-forth explanations.
The custom instructions feature is currently being rolled out to chatGPT Plus users. According to OpenAI’s announcement, custom instructions will be rolled out to all chatGPT users subsequently. So, if you are using a free tier account, you might have to wait a bit longer.
Custom instructions is a new beta feature available only to chatGPT Plus users. The instructions also never carried over to a new chat, but now users can, by sharing a bit of information that they think chatGPT should know about them and how it should respond to their prompts. They don’t just unlock a memory, but also a style designed to save time and effort.
With custom instructions, chatGPT will not only stay in character throughout your chat sessions and save time but also converse with you depending on how you want it to reply. This is an important step towards making chatGPT a truly personal AI chatbot.
To turn on custom instructions in chatGPT, follow these steps:
- Open the chatGPT website and click on your name in the bottom left corner of the page.
- Click on Settings and Beta.
- On the pop-up menu, click on Beta Features on the left panel.
- Toggle Custom Instructions to turn on the feature and exit the pop-up.
Once the feature is turned on, you can provide instructions for chatGPT to retain across all your chat sessions. Click on your name in the bottom left corner of the page again. You’ll now find a new option labeled Custom Instructions. Click on it to reveal the custom instructions editor. Provide information about yourself and how you want chatGPT’s response to be. After entering your custom instructions, click Save.
Here are some ideas for custom instructions:
- Provide basic personal details like your name, occupation, and location so chatGPT can refer to you correctly in each session and better customize responses.
- Set preferences for writing tone so chatGPT knows how to write when generating different kinds of write-ups.
- Define acronyms and abbreviations you frequently use to enable chatGPT to know their meanings in all chats.
- Give an overview of your areas of expertise and interest that chatGPT can use to frame responses suited to your interest and level of expertise.
- Outline relevant beliefs, values, or ethical stances that you hold that should guide chatGPT’s responses.
Custom instructions pave the way for smoother, more advanced prompting without repetitive explanations. ChatGPT is likely to become far more versatile, adaptive, and smarter when responding to your requests.
Is your data safe with chatGPT? All this also means that the information you provide will be used by OpenAI to improve the model further. If you’re not comfortable with your data being used by OpenAI, don’t provide any sensitive information that can get you in trouble or compromise your security in any other way.
But if you don’t mind sharing a little bit of yourself to customize and personalize chatGPT, then go ahead and create for yourself your very own personalized AI chatbot.
To add custom instructions on ChatGPT iOS, open the settings option, select New Feature, and then click Custom Instructions. The subsequent steps are the same.
As for when custom instructions will be available for free chatGPT users, currently, the only news out of OpenAI is that it will be rolled out gradually. This could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, given how the beta feature turns out in its tests with Plus subscribers.
