Recently, a subscriber asked me about the impact of AI on the writing industry. This is a complex topic that I have personal experience with. Years ago, I worked as an RFP writer for the financial tech services industry. An RFP is a response for proposal, where companies submit bids to provide technological solutions. As an RFP writer, my job was to respond to these proposals. While AI can automate some aspects of this work, it still requires human input to ensure quality. AI-generated content often lacks the depth and creativity that human storytelling offers. AI may be able to generate different answers to suit specific needs, but it cannot replicate the understanding, values, and emotions that make a story resonate with readers. AI-generated stories lack themes, premises, plots, and most importantly, relatable characters. Stories written by AI lack the ability to connect with readers on a deep level and change their lives. The craft of a writer goes beyond putting words on paper; it requires a deep understanding of what it means to be human. AI, lacking humanity, cannot contribute to the ongoing conversation that humanity has held with itself since the dawn of time. Stories matter because they nourish us, change our hearts and minds, and help us navigate life. AI-generated stories often focus on surface-level entertainment and fail to address the core of our human experience. While AI may offer speed and efficiency, it cannot replace the power of human storytelling. As a writer, I have had the privilege of working with clients who have powerful stories to tell. These stories, rooted in their experiences and values, have the ability to change lives and shape our culture. AI-generated content cannot replicate this impact. AI may bring about breakthroughs in various fields, but it will never be able to tell us what it truly means to be human. The storyteller’s craft is to capture the essence of our humanity and share it with the world.
