The Importance of Thinking in English

The Importance of Thinking in English

Foreign language learning has been a topic of interest for many people. It is often discussed and various methods are suggested to enhance the learning process. In this article, I would like to share a small but effective tip that I have found helpful in my own language learning journey.

One of the key aspects of learning a new language is thinking in that language. This practice is essential as it helps us learn faster and improve our overall language skills. However, sometimes when we try to think in English, we may face interruptions due to a lack of vocabulary and grammar knowledge. This can make thinking in English challenging.

To overcome this challenge, I have developed a method that has proven to be effective for me. I pretend as if I am a child learning English and I write down my thoughts in English, regardless of my vocabulary or grammar level. Even if my vocabulary is limited, I still try to express my thoughts in English. This exercise helps me practice thinking in English and improves my writing skills.

For example, when I see an object and don’t know its English name, I write it in my native language and continue in English. This way, I can still think in English and gradually expand my vocabulary.

To make this practice more engaging, I also maintain a daily diary in English. I write about anything that comes to my mind, even if there is no special event. This helps me develop a habit of thinking in English and retaining what I have learned. I also read my diary entries from the previous day to reinforce my learning.

It is important to note that when writing the diary, I avoid translating my thoughts from my native language to English. Instead, I focus on thinking directly in English. This helps me improve my English skills and develop a natural thought process in the language.

By incorporating these practices into my language learning routine, I have noticed significant improvements in my English proficiency. I encourage you to try these methods and make thinking in English a regular habit. Remember, the key is to think in English and not rely on translations. With consistent practice, you will see progress in your language skills.
