Prompting in AI works similar to the brain in a human body. Whatever you feed into the AI tool, whether it’s a message, a quote, or any other instruction, the AI recognizes it and provides a response based on that prompt.

In simple words, a prompt is a set of words or instructions that you give to the AI tool to get a specific response. A good prompt is one that clearly explains what you want from the AI tool, while a bad prompt lacks clarity and specificity.

To understand the importance of prompts, let’s take an example. When using Google, if you say, ‘Hey Google, set an alarm for 6:00,’ Google will set an alarm for the next 6:00, which could be in the morning or evening depending on the current time. However, if you want the alarm to be set for 6:00 in the evening tomorrow, you need to provide a more specific prompt, such as ‘Hey Google, set an alarm for tomorrow evening at 6:00.’ The AI tool acts upon the prompt you provide, so it’s crucial to be clear and detailed.

There are two types of prompts: good prompts and bad prompts. A good prompt clearly explains what you want from the AI tool, while a bad prompt lacks clarity and specificity. For example, if you ask an AI tool to write a crisp email to apply for a developer role with Amazon, a bad prompt would be ‘Please write a crisp email to apply for a developer role with Amazon.’ This prompt is too generic and doesn’t provide enough context or instructions. On the other hand, a good prompt would be ‘I’m an early career developer looking for my first stable job. Please write a letter or email to the head of engineering at Amazon, Joseph, asking for a chance to interview for the developer role. The email should be under 100 words.’ By providing a detailed prompt, you increase the chances of getting a relevant and useful response.

When entering a prompt with any AI tool, remember four important things: context, task, instructions, and examples or data. Context refers to the background or situation in which the prompt is given. The task is what you want the AI tool to do based on the prompt. Instructions provide specific guidance or requirements for the response. Examples or data can be any relevant information that helps the AI tool generate a better response.

In conclusion, prompts play a crucial role in getting the desired output from AI technology. A well-crafted prompt with clear context, task, instructions, and examples can significantly improve the quality of the response. So, when using AI tools, make sure to provide detailed prompts to get the best results.
