The Art of Prompting: A Guide to Effective Communication with GPT

Now, after providing a context and a persona or a role, the next thing we need to think about is the action item or the verbs that we’re going to use. Action words guide the idea and determine the type of output desired. Are we asking the model to create something, analyze something, or summarize something? To give you a better understanding and help you come up with more inspirational ideas, I’ve added a list of verbs here. This list gives you a basic idea of the different tasks you can ask your GPT to do. For instance, if you’re talking about business ideas, you don’t want the model to write something; you want it to brainstorm with you and come up with ideas. So, the word ‘brainstorm’ is what you will use. If you have an idea and you want to analyze it, you will say ’evaluate the idea’. Now, neither brainstorming nor creating something, you’re evaluating something, organizing a specific format, comparing two things, contrasting, researching, categorizing, and so on. It’s a long extensive list of verbs, up to 63 words, most of which will apply in your case when you’re asking for a specific task.

In addition to verbs, you can also use a bunch of adjectives to define the tone, style, and voice of the input prompts. For instance, you can say, ‘Charge GPT, I want you to be thoughtful in your output.’ This way, you can control the tone, style, and voice in which the input prompts to clarify the expectations, create a cohesive tone, and improve quality and effectiveness by describing the desired tone and style. Writers can focus on crafting well-written sentences that meet prompt goals. This list of adjectives is not exhaustive, but it gives you a basic idea of how you can use the power of prompting to drive the answer in a specific direction that you want. If you want to write something funny, you can mention that. If you want it to sound scary, you can mention that. Or if you want to create a sense of urgency because you’re selling something, then you can tell ChatGPT to do that. Whether it’s about making it angry, mysterious, salesy, or useless, use your inspiration to come up with the ideas that you want to use.

Now, let’s go back to the basics of drafting a prompt. We covered verbs, and the next is the length of the output and the output type. It is very important to be precise in terms of what type of output we expect from ChatGPT. We need to provide specificity on how much to write and the output format we desire. ChatGPT can work in multiple different formats, such as academic writing, business writing, creative writing, and other forms of writing. You can also ask GPT to write different forms of text that can be further used for different purposes. For instance, you can ask it to write a speech, a debate, a resume, or a novel. Depending on the type of output you’re looking for, make sure you assign the right type of output data that you want from the model.

Another important aspect is the format of the output. You can ask ChatGPT to provide text-based output, such as academic writing, creative writing, or business writing. You can also ask it to provide output in different formats, such as bullet points, tables, essays, or even HTML format. By specifying the format, you can get the output in the desired structure.

Prompting is an iterative process. You can keep playing around with the model and update your prompts to get the most accurate and best answer. These models are not super accurate and may make mistakes or hallucinate. Verifying and updating your prompts accordingly is crucial to get the desired output. You can assign a specific style, tone, and even mimic the writing style of a specific person or celebrity. By doing so, you can completely control the output format, voice, and tone through your prompts.

In conclusion, the art of prompting is a powerful tool for effective communication with GPT. By using the right verbs, adjectives, and specifying the length, type, and format of the output, you can guide the model to generate the desired content. Remember to iterate and refine your prompts to achieve the best results. Prompting allows you to unleash the full potential of GPT and create engaging and compelling content.
