Teaching Students to Use AI Responsibly and Effectively

Hey everyone, I’m Dan Speda, and in today’s episode, we’re discussing how to teach students to use AI. Without a doubt, one of the hottest topics right now is the role of artificial intelligence in the world of education. Today, we’re going to discuss what your students need to know to use AI both responsibly and effectively. Because whether you have that conversation with them or not, your students will be using AI. The hope is that through this presentation, you’ll learn some of the tools that you need to know to facilitate that conversation and be proactive in that discussion with your students.

Now, this video does go along with two presentations that I have, both are linked in the description below. A great way to begin the conversation is just to talk about what AI is and how students are already interacting with AI every day in their lives. They’re probably going to think you’re talking just about chatGPT, but you can talk about things like smartphones, streaming services, social media, ride-sharing apps, virtual assistants, email services, online shopping, smart appliances, and how all of these things are already being used. Even when they’re typing, how their phones adapt to their language, that’s what AI really is and that’s how it works. At its core, AI involves training computers to learn from data, just like people learn from experiences and get better at certain things. AI systems learn from large amounts of information, so one term they might be familiar with is machine learning, which involves feeding computer systems lots of data and allowing it to find patterns on its own. Then it uses algorithms to process and analyze all that data.

We’ll briefly talk about how generative AI works, but essentially, generative AI just takes lots of examples to understand patterns. For example, looking at many pictures of cats to learn what makes a cat. It can create new things by learning the rules and combining them in different ways. However, it’s important to note that AI can also create false information, so it’s crucial for students to critically evaluate the information provided by AI.

There are various AI tools that students can use to enhance their learning experience. For example, using AI as a study aid to summarize text or generate flashcards. AI can also be a research assistant, helping students find reliable resources and suggesting keywords for their searches. However, it’s important for students to understand that AI is not a substitute for their own skills and knowledge. It’s a tool to supplement learning, but they still need to put in the work to actually learn.

Students should also be aware of the limitations of AI. While AI can provide improvements for their writing, it’s not a substitute for proofreading. Students should avoid using complex language and instead focus on clear and concise communication with AI. It’s also important for students to provide constraints to AI, so it can provide more accurate and relevant information.

In conclusion, teaching students to use AI responsibly and effectively is crucial in today’s world. AI is a powerful tool that can enhance learning, but it’s important for students to understand its limitations and critically evaluate the information it provides. By having open and informed conversations with students, educators can empower them to use AI in a way that will truly benefit their education.
