Optimizing Your LinkedIn Headline for Better Results

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Headline for Better Results

We’ve got LinkedIn here on the left. We’ve got chatGPT on the right. Let’s make some better headlines. Hey, it’s Al Zac Calhoun with Coveted Consultant. I’m here on LinkedIn right now, and we’re looking at Michelle’s profile, who’s a student in one of my programs. I think you’ll resonate with the challenge that she had. The problem was that she knew it was time to update the tagline on her LinkedIn profile. She wanted it to be impressive, professional, and respectful, without any hard selling tactics. Now, the reason why parts of Michelle’s LinkedIn profile is blurred out here is because she’s already made some changes. This is where Michelle’s headline started: HR consultant simplifying HR with MC People Solutions LLC people operations HR strategy planning complex Problem Solver leadership coaching. All of this is true, but it’s just not very readable or legible. If you’re a prospective client of Michelle’s, how do you know her services are for you? Does this headline attract your interest and draw you in, or does it confuse you and push you away? I would argue that this particular headline pushes her prospective client away, even though it’s well-intended. There’s too much jargon and HR-focused language here. It’s not clear on the simple value proposition Michelle’s services offer her clientele. Let’s see what we can do. We’ve got LinkedIn here on the left. We’ve got chatGPT on the right. Let’s make some better headlines. Now, an important watch out here: most people come to chatGPT just looking for the silver bullet magic answer. So, you’ll put in a prompt something like this: ‘Write me a better headline for my LinkedIn profile,’ and then you’ll just put in your existing tagline as it reads. Let’s do that and see what we get. We get: ‘Unlocking human potential, empowering businesses with Innovative HR Solutions. HR consultant at PeopleSolutions LLC. People operations expert. HR strategist. Leadership coach.’ Is this better than the original version? I would say yes. Actually, I think this version reads better and it’s a bit more direct about what she does. But does it speak to a human? If you’re a business owner looking for an HR consultant, this introduction still feels a bit wordy or clunky. So, as you might know about chatGPT, if you give chatGPT a better input, it gives you a better output. Let’s use a more refined prompt. I put some spaces in between the prompts so you can see how it’s structured. It begins with giving chatGPT a point of view or perspective. So, we’re telling chatGPT, ‘You are a LinkedIn profile optimization expert.’ Then we’re telling chatGPT who we are: ‘I offer HR Consulting to business owners in Florida.’ Now, we’re saying what we want: ‘Write me a one-sentence I help benefit statement to use as the headline for my LinkedIn profile.’ This is my current LinkedIn headline: ‘I offer HR Consulting to CEOs and CPOs in the U.S.’ (CEO and Chief Executive Officer CPO is Chief People Officer). This is who she speaks to, these are the services that she offers, and this is the location she’s focused on. I’ll put the prompt in the first comment if you’ve got complicated language inside your LinkedIn headline. This process will help streamline that language for you. Now, these tools can be fun when you’re playing around with them one at a time. If you want to watch another video about how AI and LinkedIn work together, that video is here.
