Do you hate conflict? Do you dread difficult conversations? Do you fear the thought of giving somebody bad news? What if I said you could become a pro in navigating difficult conversations? All you have to do is practice with ChatGPT. Let me show you how.
I have ChatGPT pulled up here. Just to save some time, I’ve already asked a baseline question to get an answer going. For my example today, I’m going to be asking ChatGPT to help me with firing one of my employees.
I started by asking a simple question: ‘Can you give me three tips to use in this conversation when I’m telling my employee that he’s fired?’ ChatGPT provided me with a couple of ideas:
- Be clear and direct with them.2. Show some empathy and respect.3. Offer support and resources.
These three tips will guide me in the role-playing conversation with ChatGPT. But before we begin, I’m curious to know how you prepare for difficult conversations. Let me know in the comments down below.
Now, let’s move on to the role-playing portion. I’ve already prepared some longer answers to get some good feedback from ChatGPT. I’ll walk you through how this conversation went.
First, I provided some basic background information. I said, ‘I’m the manager, and you’re the employee.’ ChatGPT responded with the statement, ‘Thank you for coming in. I’m sorry we have to fire you.’ It then asked for more details about why I’m being fired. I explained that the employee’s performance and productivity have been low for a year, which is why termination is necessary. I thanked him for his contribution to the company.
ChatGPT then asked for specific feedback on areas where the employee could improve. I mentioned that time management skills were not very good and offered a program that the company can provide for free to work on these skills.
ChatGPT asked for the next steps in the termination process and the name of the program. I provided the necessary information and thanked him for his cooperation.
Finally, I asked ChatGPT for feedback on how I can improve for the next real conversation. It gave me some specific information about what I did well and what I can do better. For example, it suggested practicing empathy and providing specific examples or instances to better explain why the employee is being fired. It also recommended highlighting additional resources from the company, such as career counseling.
I find this role-playing exercise with ChatGPT extremely helpful. It tailors the feedback to my specific weaknesses and provides valuable insights for improvement. If you struggle with difficult conversations like I do, I highly recommend using ChatGPT for practice.
