Leveraging ChatGPT to Create User Stories

Leveraging ChatGPT to Create User Stories

Hi everyone, thanks for joining. I’m sure you have heard about large language models or generative AI, specifically ChatGPT. Today, I’m going to talk about how to leverage ChatGPT to create user stories from epic or feature with high-level requirements. This will be valuable for product owners, product managers, business analysts, or anyone involved in writing user stories or consuming them.

Before we dive into it, I assume that you have signed up for ChatGPT. It’s pretty easy, just like signing up for any other application. Once you sign up, you can come into this script and we can start from the basics.

Let’s generate user stories for the following epic: creating a beauty product online retail store. Our requirement is that customers should be able to search for beauty products easily using keywords. They should also be able to search by category, such as hair care, skincare, makeup, etc. Once they search, they should be able to add the item to the shopping cart easily.

Now, let’s see what ChatGPT does with this prompt. It does a pretty good job of writing all the user stories. For example, as a customer, I want to be able to search for beauty products easily using keywords so that I can quickly find the product I’m interested in and make a purchase. There are also user stories for searching by category and viewing detailed product information.

Next, I see the user stories, but I also want to have acceptance criteria. Let’s add a comma prompt here to generate user stories with acceptance criteria. It does a great job of adding detailed acceptance criteria for each user story. For example, the acceptance criteria for the search functionality include prominently displaying the search bar, allowing customers to enter keywords, and displaying relevant products with their names, images, and prices.

To provide more context, let’s specify that the end users are non-computer-savvy customers. This helps ChatGPT understand the role and the requirements better.

One more thing I want to show you is our tool called PurePal. PurePal utilizes ChatGPT to write user stories. If you are using Jira, we have a plugin called PurePal for Jira. It’s pretty simple to use. Once you install it, you’ll see a menu called ‘Write User Story’ where you can enter your epic and generate user stories. If you don’t have Jira, we also have a web version called PurePal Pro. You can enter your requirements and generate user stories just like we did in the example.

Thank you so much for watching this video. I hope it was useful for you. You can find all the links in the description. See you in the next video. Thank you.
