Information Seeking Behavior in ChatGPT: The Case of Programming Students from Developing Economy

Information Seeking Behavior in ChatGPT: The Case of Programming Students from Developing Economy

Good day everyone! My name is Gerald Padilla from National University Manila. Today, I will be presenting our study titled ‘Information Seeking Behavior in ChatGPT: The Case of Programming Students from Developing Economy’.

Artificial intelligence, such as chatGPT, is widely applied across various domains, including education. ChatGPT, which mimics human-like actions and addresses complex problems using extensive data sets and training, has a significant impact on programming education. It speeds up code development and harnesses community knowledge.

In the context of education, chatGPT aids students in tasks like essay writing, problem-solving, and programming. However, little empirical evidence exists about how students use chatGPT for information seeking in terms of programming.

Our study examines the factors influencing students’ information seeking behavior in chatGPT within programming courses. The research is conducted among higher education students in the Philippines, a developing country. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of chatGPT in terms of programming education. They also offer insights for educators and researchers to enhance chatGPT’s educational effectiveness.

For hypothesis development, we have eight hypotheses: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, social influence, hurting, trustworthiness, convenience, ethical considerations, and information seeking behavior.

The study employed a survey instrument based on measures used in prior research. The survey comprised two main sections: the demographic profile and the factors related to information seeking behavior. A total of 299 survey responses were considered for analysis.

The results and discussions of our study show that chatGPT is found to be easy to use, convenient, and provides relevant responses for programming-related information. Social influence and hurting positively influence students’ acceptance and use of chatGPT. Trustworthiness did not have a significant impact, while convenience had a positive impact on chatGPT usage. Students also consider ethical issues when using chatGPT for programming.

The study confirms chatGPT’s potential role in education and provides empirical evidence that academic institutions can use to enhance learning and assessment policies. Opportunities are identified for practitioners to design AI-based learning systems tailored to various user groups, improving productivity and efficiency in programming-related information delivery.

However, the study has limitations. It focused solely on selected programming courses within a single university in the Philippines, limiting generalization to students in other developing countries. Future research can involve multiple universities from multiple countries and explore cross-country comparative studies.

In conclusion, our study found that information seeking behavior is influenced by convenience, ethical consideration, hurting, perceived usefulness, and the actual use of chatGPT. Factors like perceived ease of use and trustworthiness did not significantly impact information seeking behavior. Overall, chatGPT is suggested to have a positive influence on students’ information seeking behavior, but further research is needed to understand its evolving usage patterns.

Thank you for your attention. I’m Gerald Padilla from National University Manila, and that concludes our study on information seeking behavior in chatGPT. Have a blessed day! Goodbye.
