If you work in sales and marketing and you work with spreadsheets, there’s no doubt that you have been extremely frustrated and wasted a lot of time cleaning up spreadsheets with contact data. In this article, I’m going to show you how you can use ChatGPT with a new code interpreter plugin to clean up spreadsheets in just minutes.
I have an example of a contact spreadsheet with about 50 records that’s highly flawed. From start to finish, it took me under 13 minutes to clean it up using ChatGPT. Let’s walk through a few of the issues with this spreadsheet.
First, the full name is combined into one column. Next, there are multiple email addresses in the email column. The phone numbers have different formats for each row. The business name is combined with the state and there are extra characters. The location city and state are in one column. The country is formatted with different versions.
To clean up this spreadsheet, I uploaded it into ChatGPT and it quickly discovered all the issues. It provided recommendations to clean up the data, and I proceeded with the recommendations. ChatGPT created little scripts behind the scenes to do all the work for me. It separated the full name into first and last names, fixed the email addresses and phone number formatting, and standardized the country format.
Although ChatGPT is not perfect, it made the data cleaning process much easier and faster. It created a new CSV file with the cleaned-up data. I was able to iterate and make additional changes to further improve the spreadsheet.
