Google's Search Generative Experience: Revolutionizing Search and Shopping

For a company that controls over 93 percent of the search engine space, did anyone really think Google would let OpenAI’s chatGPT win? Well, the tech giant has rightfully dominated the industry for a very long time. And even though their efforts have faced some serious criticism in the past, Google has finally decided that it’s time to show why they’re just the undisputed leader in the industry.

During the 2023 Google developer conference, Google announced the introduction of new ways to find information, enjoy your search experience, and interact with the web much better than any AI chatbot can offer. This article will explore how Google plans to do this and what to expect.

For years now, Google has been the most reliable source for finding information anywhere on the web. However, with the rising popularity of AI chatbots, particularly chatGPT, Google’s position at the top seemed slightly threatened. But with the introduction of the Search Generative Experience (SGE), Google aims to solidify its position.

SGE is a set of search and interface capabilities that integrates generative AI-powered results into Google search engine query responses. It is built on a large language model called the Pathways Language Model (Palm 2) and is trained to improve user search results by enabling the AI to analyze all the results and complex subjects to provide precise answers. Instead of scrolling through multiple pages, users will receive a summary and direct results, as well as links to back the answer given.

To access SGE, users can simply use Google search as they always have. The AI-generated snapshot will provide a comprehensive answer relevant to the question, and users can ask follow-up questions for a more conversational experience. The AI will recall the initial query and allow modifications without the need to repeat it.

Google’s SGE also enhances the shopping experience by offering a virtual try-on feature. Users can see how clothes look on a variety of real models, representing different sizes, skin tones, body shapes, hair types, and ethnicities. This feature aims to address the dissatisfaction online shoppers often face when products don’t meet their expectations.

In addition to improving search and shopping, Google’s SGE will also provide users with suggestions, next steps, and related questions to further enhance their search experience. The AI-generated results will be backed by reliable sources, and users can verify and authenticate the information.

While the SGE is currently only accessible to users in the United States as an experiment in the Google Search Labs initiative, it is expected to be released to the general public in the near future. With these exciting features, Google continues to demonstrate its supremacy in the search space.

The future of search looks promising with AI advancements. Google’s SGE is just the beginning of a new era in search and shopping, where AI will play a crucial role in delivering personalized and efficient results.
