Exploring Data Analysis and Visualization with ChatGPT

Hi there! My name is Chad Skelton, a former data journalist from the Vancouver Sun. Currently, I teach journalism and data visualization at Quantum Polytechnic University in Surrey, British Columbia. I also teach an online Master’s level course in data storytelling and visualization at the University of Florida.

In this video, I want to show you what ChatGPT can do when it comes to data analysis and visualization. The main tool that has made this possible is a plug-in from Notable, a Jupiter notebooks website.

I will explain the steps to set up ChatGPT Plus for data analysis and visualization. But first, let’s dive into the exciting part: what ChatGPT Plus can do.

I will be using a dataset on bike thefts, which I worked on during my time at the Vancouver Sun. This dataset includes information such as the date and time of each theft, the location, and the district. I have uploaded this dataset to Notable.

By simply asking ChatGPT to analyze the data in the bike thefts.csv file and produce some data analysis and visualizations, it starts by describing the fields and showing a preview of the data. It also checks for missing values and provides basic statistics.

Next, it generates visualizations, such as a bar chart showing the distribution of thefts by district and a heat map showing the distribution of thefts by hour and district. It even catches a mistake in the data and suggests possible reasons for the spike in thefts at midnight.

I’m impressed by how ChatGPT can analyze the data with minimal prompting. It goes beyond just creating charts and provides explanations and theories based on the data. It even saves the analysis in a Notable workbook, allowing you to revisit and share your work.

To use ChatGPT with the Notable plug-in, you need a paid subscription to ChatGPT Plus and an account on Notable. Once you have both, you can install the Notable plug-in and connect it to your account. You can then upload your datasets to Notable and start analyzing them with ChatGPT.

I’m excited about the possibilities of ChatGPT and the Notable plug-in for data analysis and visualization. It’s a powerful tool that can help both beginners and experienced data analysts explore and understand their data. I will continue to explore ChatGPT and share my findings in future videos. Stay tuned!
