Every class has a syllabus that outlines policies and guidelines, which students should always follow. It is important to rely on the guidance of the professor rather than random information found in videos or other sources.

Citation is a fundamental aspect of academic culture. In the past, authors would often plagiarize each other without consequences. However, in our modern academic world, citation is crucial. It demonstrates an understanding of the history of ideas and contributes to the authenticity and credibility of academic work. By citing sources, we show respect for the intellectual property of others and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

When it comes to using AI tools like ChatGPT or Bard in a college context, there are clear distinctions between cheating, gray areas, and acceptable practices. Cheating involves copying entire paragraphs or sentences from an AI model and presenting them as one’s own work. This is a blatant form of academic dishonesty and should be avoided at all costs. On the other hand, using AI tools for broad-level searches to find general information or themes is considered fair use and normal. Students can use AI tools to generate ideas and inspiration, but it is crucial to transform and develop those ideas into their own words and thoughts.

Gray areas may arise when using AI tools to generate outlines or drafts. While it can be tempting to rely heavily on AI-generated content, it is important to be transparent about the use of AI tools and give proper attribution. Outlines or drafts generated by AI should serve as a starting point, and students should ensure that their final work reflects their own ideas and analysis.

Ultimately, the goal of using AI tools in academia should be to enhance learning and critical thinking skills. Students should engage with AI tools responsibly, respecting academic standards and maintaining integrity in their work. It is essential to have open conversations with professors about the appropriate use of AI tools and seek guidance when needed. By doing so, students can navigate the ethical challenges of using AI tools in academia and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in a responsible and authentic manner.
