Once upon a time in a peaceful, quiet village, there lived a wise and loving father who was a farmer, along with his curious young son. The father believed it was critical for his son to understand and know the true value of a person’s life from a very young age.
One lively morning, the father called his son and presented him with a piece of heavy metal, a precious family heirloom. The young boy’s eyes sparkled with wonder as he beheld the intricate craftsmanship and timeless beauty of the artifact.
Sensing his son’s curiosity, the father smiled warmly and said, ‘My dear son, today I will teach you a valuable lesson about life. If you want to know the worth of your life, take this metal and go to the market. If anyone inquires for the price, do not say a word, just raise up one finger.’
Eager with curiosity, the boy embarked on a journey to the bustling marketplace. His mission was to wander around various merchants and wait for anyone who would approach and buy the metal.
The first person he stumbled upon was a young man in a junk shop nearby the market. The young man asked, ‘Hey boy, what’s up with that junk you are holding? Do you want to sell that to us? How much?’
As instructed, the boy didn’t say a word and just raised up one finger. The young man offered, ‘I’ll give you a dollar for it, so you don’t have to go to the market.’
But the boy continued his journey, visibly upset as the heavy metal would probably only value at one dollar. He wandered around the marketplace when suddenly, an old elderly merchant with a gentle demeanor approached the boy.
The old lady asked, ‘How much is this medal?’ The boy then raised up one finger. The merchant checked the metal and made an offer for it. ‘It’s a bit old and worn out, but I’m willing to still pay $100 for it.’ The old merchant’s offer surprised the boy, and he ran back to his father to tell him about the different offers he received.
His father smiled and said, ‘Not yet, son. Now I want you to go to the museum downtown, stroll around with the metal, and see if anyone will approach you.’
As the boy arrived at the museum, a middle-aged lady approached him and asked, ‘What are you holding? Do you want to sell that to us? How much?’ The boy raised up one finger. The lady carefully examined the metal and offered a good sum of money for it, explaining that its beauty and historical significance were immediately apparent to her. ‘I will pay $1,000 for it,’ she said.
The boy couldn’t believe the offer and ran back to his father to tell him about it. His father then instructed him to visit an old antique and artifact shop downtown, across the vegetable market, and look for the owner.
Curious and intrigued, the boy tirelessly went downtown to find the shop. As he walked in towards the counter, an old man suddenly shouted and vividly screamed, ‘Oh my God! You are holding one of the rarest metals in the world! Various artifact collectors are moving heaven and earth just to find one of this kind!’
As an esteemed artifact collector renowned for his discerning eye and appreciation of masterpieces approached the boy, the collector’s gaze was filled with anticipation. He meticulously examined every minute detail, immersing himself in its rich history. A smile of satisfaction and recognition gradually spread across his face. ‘This antique is a true masterpiece, a rare gem of immeasurable value,’ the collector said.
The collector asked the boy, ‘How much do I need to pay to have this precious piece?’ The boy raised up one finger. ‘Can I buy it for just one million dollars?’ the collector asked. ‘Okay, I’ll pay for it. I’ve been searching for it almost my whole life. It is a very significantly high price, but it surely reflects this rhodium’s antique’s worth and rareness.’
The boy, visibly surprised, ran back to his father and shared the news. His father smiled and said, ‘Now, my son, do you understand the value and worth of your life? You can decide whether you want to be a one-dollar medal or a one-million-dollar medal. Life is all about where you want to put yourself. There will be people who will not recognize you, undervalue you, and not even care for you. But always remember, there will be someone out there who will be there for you, love you, give you everything, and be your everything. So, it’s up to you now, my son, to decide the real value and worth of your life.’
The son embraced this wisdom, vowing to always recognize and cherish his own value regardless of external judgments. And so, the young boy grew into a wise and confident man, carrying his father’s teachings with him throughout his life. He shared his knowledge with others, spreading the wisdom of knowing one’s true value and worth and reminding them that within each person lies an immeasurable treasure waiting to be discovered and cherished.
