All of us have recently learned that ChatGPT can be used for writing essays, such as personal statements and statements of purpose for studying abroad. But can we rely on ChatGPT for writing these important documents?
Hi everyone, I am Neha Grival, the founder of Wise Up Communications. In this video, I’m going to evaluate a study abroad essay written by ChatGPT.
I went on ChatGPT and asked it to write a 1000-word statement of purpose for a Master’s in Material Science and Engineering. The document generated by ChatGPT was approximately 764 words, which is still acceptable considering that personal information and details can be added to reach the desired word count.
Let’s analyze the essay paragraph by paragraph:
-
Introduction: The first two paragraphs provided by ChatGPT lack a personal story or anecdote, which is essential to engage the reader. The opening paragraph should hook the audience and showcase the writer’s motivation to pursue the program.
-
Academic Background: ChatGPT does a good job in this paragraph by mentioning the subjects studied and the writer’s interest in them. However, it is important to also include projects and extracurricular activities to demonstrate the overall preparation for the graduate program.
-
Work Experience: ChatGPT accurately includes the necessary information about the writer’s career in the automotive industry. However, the writing lacks a human touch and feels robotic.
-
Motivation for the Program: The reasoning provided by ChatGPT for pursuing the Master’s in Material Science and Engineering is vague and generalized. It is crucial to be specific about why the writer wants to join the program and why this particular university.
-
Career Goals: The career goals paragraph generated by ChatGPT is also generalized and lacks clarity. It is important to provide specific details about short-term and long-term goals.
-
Conclusion: The conclusion paragraph provided by ChatGPT includes most of the necessary components, such as reiterating the writer’s fit for the program and expressing enthusiasm. However, it lacks a connection to the introduction or personal story.
In conclusion, while ChatGPT can assist with grammar, vocabulary, and overall structure, it is not recommended to rely solely on it for writing study abroad essays. The generated essays lack personal feelings, opinions, and the human touch that make an essay stand out. It is important to conduct proper research, include personal anecdotes, and tailor the essay to the specific university and program.
