New research conducted by the University of Montana and its partners has demonstrated that artificial intelligence has the potential to perform at the level of the top one percent of human thinkers when it comes to creativity. The study involved the submission of eight responses generated by ChatGPT, an AI application powered by the GPT4 artificial intelligence engine. These responses were compared with answers provided by a control group consisting of 24 students from the University who were enrolled in entrepreneurship and personal finance classes taught by Professor Guzik.
The scores obtained from these submissions were then compared to the results of 2,700 college students across the United States who took the Torrance tests of creative thinking in 2016. The findings of the research revealed that ChatGPT demonstrated exceptional creativity, placing it in the top percentile for fluency, which refers to its ability to generate a large quantity of ideas, as well as for originality, which refers to its capacity to produce new and unique ideas. While the AI application slightly lagged in flexibility, which pertains to its ability to generate ideas across different categories and types, it still achieved an impressive ranking in the 97th percentile.
It’s important to highlight that among the human students of Dr. Guzik at the University of Montana, some also achieved placements in the top one percent for creativity. However, it is noteworthy that ChatGPT, the AI application, surpassed the majority of college students across the nation in this aspect. These tests were conducted during the spring semester with the valuable assistance of Christian Guilty from Western and Christian Burge from Vilnius University.
Recently, in May 2023, these exciting findings were presented at the Southern Oregon University Creativity Conference. During the conference, Dr. Guzik emphasized the cautious interpretation of the data, focusing on presenting the results rather than drawing extensive conclusions. However, the evidence shared at the event strongly suggested that AI is demonstrating the development of creative abilities that are on par with, and possibly even surpassing, human capabilities.
This implies that artificial intelligence is making remarkable strides in the realm of creativity. The remarkable capabilities exhibited by ChatGPT and its potential to match or exceed human creativity present exciting possibilities for its utilization by human beings. This level of AI brilliance opens doors to various applications across different fields in the realm of innovation and problem-solving.
ChatGPT can serve as a powerful tool for generating a multitude of ideas and novel solutions. Its ability to think beyond traditional boundaries and generate unique concepts can greatly enhance the creative process for individuals and teams. Furthermore, in fields such as art, literature, and music, ChatGPT can be leveraged as a source of inspiration and collaboration. Artists, writers, and musicians can engage with the AI to explore new artistic directions, gain fresh perspectives, and push the boundaries of their respective crafts.
The AI’s fluency in generating a large volume of ideas and its knack for originality can provide valuable insights and assist in the creation of innovative and captivating works. Moreover, in educational settings, ChatGPT can act as a dynamic and interactive learning companion. Students can engage with the AI to brainstorm ideas, explore different concepts, and expand their creative thinking abilities by providing personalized and diverse perspectives. ChatGPT can enhance the educational experience and foster critical thinking and imaginative problem-solving skills in learners.
In the business world, the AI’s creative prowess can be harnessed to fuel innovation and drive organizational growth. ChatGPT can assist in ideation sessions, helping teams generate a wide range of ideas and uncover unique business opportunities. Its ability to think flexibly across various categories can aid in identifying untapped markets, developing inventive marketing strategies, and enhancing product design.
