Artificial Intelligence for Extracting Information from Bills

We all receive bills at home or at work. We also send purchase orders or documents, such as the Bill of Material. The Bill of Material is an invoice that you receive for the materials you have, for example, in a construction project like a house. I wonder if artificial intelligence can help with these bills. Not to pay them, but to extract information or data from the images. So, I challenged ChatGPT to extract the table part of the bill, which contains the list of materials with their costs and unit prices.

The second challenge is to extract the payment information from the bill. I loaded the image files into ChatGPT and asked it to extract the information from the table. It went through several algorithms to isolate the cells of the table. After that, it asked me for confirmation multiple times. Finally, it showed me the extracted information and data. To validate the extraction, I asked ChatGPT to export the data into an Excel file. I downloaded the file and opened it. I was pleasantly surprised to see that all the data were present. I could see the items, quantities, unit prices, and total prices. This opens up a lot of possibilities, such as treating the data in Excel, transferring it to a database, or using desktop BI for analytics. The second part of the challenge was to extract the payment information. ChatGPT processed the content of the images and proposed the result in an Excel file. When I opened the file, I found the supplier, bank details, account name, eban number, Swift number, and the bill of material reference. It also included the total cost. With these challenges, we successfully extracted both the list of materials and the payment information from the bill.
