A Week in News: Hollywood Writers' Strike Ends, Political Debates, and More

Good morning everyone, it is Tuesday, September 26, and you are listening to the Mo News podcast. I’m Jill Wagner, and this is the place where we bring you just the facts. We read all of the news and read between the lines so you don’t have to. It’s just me today, which means baby O has arrived. Congratulations to Mosh and Alex on their beautiful baby girl, Olivia Gray Wuo. I spoke to Mosh on Monday night, and he says they are all home and doing great. Like a true journalist, Olivia arrived right on deadline, Alex’s due date. Best of luck to all three. In the meantime, I will be holding things down until Mosh comes back from his paternity leave.

Now, let’s move on to the headlines. Let’s Make a Deal Studios and writers have reached an agreement. What comes next and what does that mean for our favorite shows? In a tale of two strikes, the UAW expands its strike against General Motors and Stellantis. What’s going on with Ford? In alternative political news, Gavin Nome and Ronda Santis have agreed to debate on Fox News. Back to our actual political universe, the second Republican debate is on Wednesday.

In tech news, GPT can now speak, listen, and process images. And in entertainment news, we’ve got a new power couple: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Even Coach Bill Belichick is a fan. Plus, on this day in history, Westside Story opened on Broadway, the first televised presidential debate took place, and The Beatles released Abbey Road.

In Hollywood news, Hollywood writers and studios have reached a tentative deal on a new contract, essentially ending the writer’s 146-day strike. The agreement still needs to be approved by the union’s board and members, but that could happen as soon as this week. The writers were able to get concessions from the studios on most of their demands. Writers will reportedly be receiving bonuses for popular shows on streaming services, and the studios have agreed to staff a certain number of writers per TV show.

The UAW strike against the big three automakers is still happening. The union expanded the targeted strikes on GM and Stellantis, saying that Ford had done more to meet their demands. Negotiations are still ongoing, but analysts believe that the resolution with the writers’ strike will pave the way for a deal with the UAW within the next few weeks.

In political news, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and California Governor Gavin Newsom have agreed to debate each other on Fox News. The debate is scheduled for November 30th. Meanwhile, the second Republican primary debate is happening on Wednesday. The leading 2024 Republican presidential candidates will go head-to-head once again.

In tech news, OpenAI’s chatbot GPT can now see, hear, and speak. Users can opt into voice conversations and choose from five different synthetic voices. The chatbot can also process images. This update comes as tech giants race to launch new chatbot apps and features.

In entertainment news, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have caught the attention of the NFL. Travis Kelce’s jersey sales have seen a nearly 400% spike since Taylor Swift attended a Kansas City Chiefs game. The power couple has everyone talking, including Coach Bill Belichick.

That’s all for today’s news. Thank you for listening to the Mo News podcast. If you like what you hear, share it with your friends and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram. See you tomorrow!
